The theory/computer test After signing up with a driving school of your choice, you will be provided with a comprehensive handbook that consists of 500 questions concerning the traffic code of the country. The test itself, also known as the Highway Code exam, is comprised of 50 questions that cover the content of the handbook. Students are expected to obtain a minimum score of 84% in order to progress to the next phase. Those who manage to complete it have to complete 6 hours of theory and practical courses that delve into several aspects of car maintenance and care.

The road testThis is the practical portion of the exam and it is where driving skills and the ability to handle the car on the road is tested. You are allowed to take it after completing 16 hours of practical lessons with your instructor. This is only the required minimum since the courses can extend beyond that if you or the instructor feels that you need more practice. Generally speaking, most students need at least 30 hours of practice before they are fully ready to take the practical road test. The test includes the basic driving maneuvers that are needed in everyday life. You will need to showcase a decent command of reverse parking, 3-point turns, driving on a slope, parallel parking, and more importantly driving on the open road. The final step of the exam is the most important one and your success in it is solely predicated on meeting the examiner’s requirements.

What happens if you fail the tests?While the exams are fairly simple and straightforward, failing the test is still a possibility if you don’t prepare correctly. If you fail the theory test, you will be given another date to take it again after completing the courses. Failing the practical test, on the other hand, is handled differently from school to school. Some driving schools provide their students with free and unlimited re-sits until they manage to pass the practical exam. This is a highly valuable feature that comes in really handy and you need to make sure that it is included in your package.
